brush painting

yesterday I spent like 12 hours or something working on my Chinese brush painting final...due tomorrow. LOL. It was a really tedious process.....I didn't expect it to take so long....

I had to wash my felt cloth like 500 times because the blue paint kept staining through the wet paper. To do a background wash, the entire paper has to be completely wet.... so that's why I have so many tears on the paper LOLLL cause I suck....and kept ripping them accidently... I had to wait a lot for the felt to dry and my paintings to dry!?! Like I had to draw first with the ink...wait for that to dry....so that I can wet the entire paper without makign the black ink smear...then I can paint/color it (while the paper is still wet).

I am so horrible at applying background wash!!! My only hope when I was painting was that it would turn out ok when everything dried...and it did? sort of?...

You shouldn't be surprise that they are heads... However, I seriously need to get my act together and put together a portfolio so I can do some freelance work! Lately, I had no time for myself because I was immersed with work and interning but with the change in schedule, I will finally have one day off! You don't understand how glorious this is to me. For the past month (?) I literally had no time off. So first things first, I will finish up the face book (I KNOW RIGHT?). Then I will focus most of this summer on my portfolio... that's the plan! We'll see what happens.

hi so i havent updated in a while....
i only have school stuff i dont have a lot of interesting things to show you guys...
hopefully this is somewhat interesting LOL
i have stuff from my chinese brush painting and figure drawing class!
so far so good! since im a beginner in both classes, i was told that i'm doing well...its encouraging :D

today i had my chinese brush painting midterm critique
it was really fun and amazing to see everyone's works up and covering all four walls of our small classroom llololol

and my teacher totally guessed what time i started and what time i probably finished after i said that LOLO lfogjifghjuhD he said i did good but i should not do the same thing for the final

Final!The colors when printed are actually quite fine. It's a bit duller than the original but overall, I think it's good enough. :) I went to a copy/print shop to print it right before class again...orz. Actually I never wanted to go to that copy/print center again because I had a bad experience a few months ago... but this time was good! I went to Kinko's first but I got annoyed and stomped off. Hmph.

I know this post doesn't have any art but I always think about (creating) art so why not post these thoughts here since this is an art blog :)

Once again I find myself trying to balance and rationalize art in my life. I think art is something that is so easy to let go of, so easy to forget completely. If you think about it, the artist is the only person who truly cares about his or her own work. One needs determination and will to continue in this profession. I truly admire those who stick with it to the end because it is so hard. I finally understand what they mean when they say, if you can do something else besides art, then do that instead. I've finally came into terms with not doing art as a profession. Forget the practical side of art like curating, graphic design, animation and what not. I simply cannot sell myself and make this passion into a business. For me, they have to be separate. What I truly want to do is work on my own art and not someone else's. What is my art? Well, that's something I will have to figure out, but I don't mind. The process is half the excitement (and frustration).

There are a few projects I am collaborating with Lei on in the near future, but also I have my own personal projects that I've been planning since the beginning of this year. I'm excited but nervous because they are quite personal and I feel like I would be exposing my soul but at the same time, I feel like I need to do it. Maybe it's also the fact that this year's ending aka it's the start of a new year that I feel quite excited about picking up art again. Of course, I am going to bring my art supplies from home this time! I just want a job that pays and time to work on my art. It is a simple request, yes? It is my biggest anticipation for the new year. If I can work on creating art, then I can get around to compiling a portfolio/website ~~and even an art show~~!! And ultimately, I will be able to express and share with the world my thoughts, feelings, emotions, perspective, and life. Reaching out and connecting with other people through art is one of the most beautiful things ever. A universal language.

But first, let's take this one step at a time.

There was a phase when I all did was draw no (just black) eyes. It was really fun and I'm trying to go back to that. Reverting back to my old ways I guess.
I want to go back to coloring and painting but since I will be inking and working in black and white (once again) I should probably focus on that right now. I keep buying new ink bottles because I keep knocking and spilling the old ones I have! When will I learn!

Also, I told Lei that since I'm going home, I'll take photos of (more) old stuff LOL. My new years resolution is to (obviously) draw more!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2009 in terms of art felt quite sad and lacking :( 2010 will be better, I hope!

My homework was to illustrate one of Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities.
I did Octavia:

"If you choose to believe me, good. Now I will tell how Octavia, the spider-web city, is made. You walk on the little wooden ties, careful not to set your foot in the open spaces, or you cling to the hempen strands. This is the foundation of the city: a net which serves as passage and as support. We didn't have to illustrate everything and we could interpret it anyway we wanted to so...yeah...... Um, I didn't really finish cause I procrastinated too much and I worked on it on the day or before it was due again.....Why does this keep happening.....

There's actually a cable car (the aerial kind) but you can't really notice it much. Sigh I was rushing so badly.....I did like nothing for hours....Why.....

It's supposed to be inspired by some art movements that we got to pick from and I chose art nouveau.

I don't really like the final outcome! I hate some of the colors. I was rushing really badly cause I wanted to catch some sleep haha...why do I always do things at the last minute....sigh. Anyway after listening to the critique I would definitely like to change some things :( whether I would really care enough to do ...uh depends. Lol.

I am realllllyyyyy bad at drawing people, especially from photographs! I did this on the day it was due...AGAIN. Why do I keep doing this to myself? Hahaha. But seriously though, I hate drawing from photos. Also, do you notice the fox hide? I had to put an animal in as part of the assignment lol. Instead of his fur coat, I put the fox. I don't know whether he would have worn that though but maybe....HIS FACE WAS SOOOO HARD. I gave up. I gave up on the whole thing.

Oh yeah, we didn't really have to do realism-style but lol I wanted to? Cause when I think of Oscar Wilde, I think of Dorian Gray = fine art painting. I wasn't going to put him in The New Yorker either but I was told to...anyway I really like the style of the type for The New Yorker. xD

I really want to paint so I decide to install Art Rage. Actually I want to try Painter but that program never seems to work on me. So far, I quite like Art Rage. It is like CLEAN oil painting LOL But I need to experiment more to get the hang of it and I AM SO OUT OF PRACTICE LOL WHAT ARE COLORS??? HA HA

Anyway, I always love it when programs mimic traditional media!! Of course the real this is always best (IMO) but I'm lazy and cheap. Plus, this way I don't have to clean up (most important lol)

Supposed to illustrate a quote. I used this one from House of Leaves:

The red parts are what I left out...accidentally. I JUST SAW IT RIGHT NOW SIGH. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT LOLLLL. I should have double-checked before turning it in. OH WELL. TT_TT....I think I was doing this around 1:30 AM-5:30 AM on the day it was due. I don't know why it took so long.... I think I was distracted a lot and I'm naturally slow....sigh.

Honestly I've never read this book so it's just purely from the quote....

Also, originally I didn't want to include the part of the quote before the word 'BLIND'... but my teacher told me it wouldn't make as much sense without it..... but I ended up hiding it anyway?! SIGH. Actually I think it's more readable in real life.... Well people seemed to be able to.... Critique was okay... I wish we did it before turning the work in....though....so I could actually make this somewhat better after listening to suggestions and stuff.

we had our group critique today (whoa first time i ever had one o_o im a newb okay o_o) and I was late to class cause I was finishing this!!....i just sat at a place where i eat lunch for like three hours and I didnt even get to eat my lunch HAHAH so i had to bring it to class with me during the critique O_O munch munch munch. actually it was just a snack and not really a real lunch lollll

there are a couple of things i regret about this and i wish i could like do some stuff to make it better BUT I WAS SUCH IN A HURRY O_O sigh i really want to make the creatures show up more like what we talked about in the critique T3T

I also took WIP photos sooo here they are (going backwards hahha)

Mostly old studies/experiments I did on SAI (aka my favorite program!). There are a couple of them that are done on PS. I WASN'T KIDDING WHEN I TOLD YOU I LIKE TO DRAW HEADS/FACES (although most of them are cropped :)

The UGLY quality is due to the GIF quality. I will upload the higher/nicer quality tomorrow because I actually cannot stand how ugly/off it is but I am too lazy right now to change it.

the typos were fixed in the final ones....i think....LOL we were rushing really badly and i think on one the postcard front the typo wasnt fixed but it was correctly written on the back so we were like 'whatever'
